🤔 SOME THOUGHTS
There's a job on a movie set called the 'focus puller.'
The task requires keeping the camera lens locked in on whichever actor or object the audience is meant to pay attention to. Pulling focus is a dance between the camera, the actors, the movement in the scene, & the director's vision. It looks easy until you try it.
When everything was shot on film, pulling focus was essential. With digital cameras, computer chips do a great job identifying whatever is algorithmically determined to be the center of a viewer's attention. It's called 'auto-focus.' While it can be helpful on a film set, it’s dangerous in the real world. We can’t let our skills at pulling focus atrophy & get overtaken by automaticity.
The thing is, manually pulling focus is harder than letting auto-focus kick in.
It's exhausting to peer into a busy scene & lock onto whatever we deem the most critical subject. Distractions are everywhere. The thing we're focusing on never wants to stay still. You have to be ever-diligent.
But letting go of our responsibility to actively choose leaves much to chance. If somebody wanders between you & your point of focus, the auto-focus will jump. If your subject shifts slightly - moves closer or a few steps back - the auto-focus might not catch it in time.
As we barrel toward the new year, let’s turn off the auto-focus on the camera of our attention. Let’s break free from jumping at every shiny object, loud noise, and short-term distraction keeping us from staying focused on what truly matters.
Know it will be harder to pull your own focus. Know you'll be tempted to flick on the auto-focus & let it grab things for you.
But also know this: You are the only one who knows what's important & what's just background movement meant to stay forever out-of-focus.
