Welcome to the 16 fine folks who joined us last week.
If your inbox is anything like mine right now, it’s filled with Black Friday deals & exclamation points & all manner of artificial urgency. As a result, I’m thinking about less right now.
We’ve talked a lot about Arthur Brooks on the show lately & for good reason. (Go read Build the Life You Want.)
He says something I love: “Satisfaction that endures is a function of all the things you have divided by the things you want. Of course, you’ve got a have-more strategy. But you also need a want-less strategy. You need to manage your wants just as much as you need to manage your haves.”
Like so many things, that management strategy starts with awareness.
The awareness that industry will not suggest we buy less.
That media will not suggest we watch less.
That technology will not suggest we scroll or swipe less.
That politicians will not suggest we fight less.
It’s up to each of us to determine what we need less of so we have the time, energy, attention, & money for what we want more of.
There’s too much noise & too much distraction to let it happen on its own. We need to manage it - actively & every day.
