🤔 SOME THOUGHTS
Most of what’s on our phones doesn’t matter.
Yet, we've all been there: thumb over the screen, about to check the latest updates or social media feeds. We tell ourselves it's important to stay informed, keep up, and stay connected.
In the year leading up to the most recent election, I found myself consuming more and more content about the political horse race. The polls, the pundits, the constant spinning up of outrage.
Then, about a month before we voted, it hit me: None of it would change my mind - and my watching it certainly wouldn't change anyone else's mind.
I was consuming to consume & it was drowning everything else out.
So I stopped cold turkey. After the election, I went further. I unsubscribed and unfollowed all political news sources to ensure I didn’t backslide.
All because, finally, I realized that none of it mattered.
Last week, I wrote about picking up our phones less often.
This is the philosophy to adopt before we can pull that off.
We need to recognize that most of what we check for doesn't matter. No amount of screen time limits, app blockers, or willpower tactics will work until we embrace this truth.
To get there, I like the questions Ryan Holiday asks in Stillness is the Key:
“How different would the world look if people spent as much time listening to their conscience as they did to chattering broadcasts? If they could respond to the calls of their convictions as quickly as we answer the dings and rings of technology in our pockets?”
How different, indeed.

Keep chasing, my friends.

I stopped cold turkey in 2016 and haven’t looked back. It’s a worthwhile path forward. I show up more whole when I don’t have unnecessary noise.
